More Than Words: How Our Community Celebrated the Art of Poetry

On March 21st, the world celebrated Poetry Day. But for me, the celebration started a bit earlier, and in a way I never truly expected. I have always believed that learning a language is about so much more than memorizing grammar rules and vocabulary; it’s about finding new ways to express who we are and how we see the world. This past week, I saw that belief come to life in the most beautiful way.

What began as a spontaneous initiative by Daryl, a dedicated and deeply engaged member of our community, transformed into a beautiful cascade of creativity and vulnerability on our Discord. Watching our students come together, regardless of whether they were beginners or advanced learners, to pen their own verses in Spanish was one of the most moving moments of my journey as a teacher. Every poem shared carried a story, a feeling, and a unique perspective.

I was so touched by their bravery and talent that I knew these words couldn't just stay inside a chat room. They deserved a stage. They deserved to be celebrated. That is why I created this dedicated space: our ALM Community Poetry Gallery. Here, you will find a collection of original poems written by our incredible students. It is a testament to the fact that when we allow ourselves to be creative and connect, language truly becomes the music of the soul.

I invite you to explore, to be inspired, and to feel the voices of our community.

¡Bienvenidos a nuestra galería de versos!

Escucha de la lluvia
Las gotas de lluvia gordas
Que hacen el aire se siente fresco

Es como la canción del idioma español
Que abre mi mente y mi corazón a nuevos lugares, culturas y
sobre todo, buenos amigos
— Shelby

Quiero dar las ‘gracias’ a este comunidad
Porque todos aquí lléname
Con alegría y felicidad

El viaje a Guanajuato
Fue un sueño hecho realidad
La comida, las bebidas
Y Andrea, su hermana, y su mum and dad

Mi corazón crece con cada miembro nuevo
Y el amor que todos dan a cada uno

Me encantan el mezcal de las culturas
Las risas
Los esfuerzos
Y la creatividad
— Daryl

Alma Compartida

— C. P.

Su nombre era Daryl, un buen amigo
Pero le gusta causar demasiado peligro
Él comenzo un juego
Con un poco de fuego
Y en publico, es un gran enemigo.

Estar muy cerca de tí
Es la vida para mí
Cualquier precio siempre pago.

Sostenerte es un sueno.
Y por eso, eres mi dueño
Como si seas un mago.

Mirarte es un tesoro.
Y brillas como oro.
Nunca de ti los ojos saco.

Olerte es magnifico.
Quiero comerte, más especifico.
Ven aquí, mi amor, mi taco.

I want to extend a massive thank you to everyone who participated in this celebration of language and art. It takes incredible courage to share your heart in a second language, and I am so proud of every single one of you.

Please note that we have not edited or corrected any of the poems shared in this gallery. They are presented exactly as our students wrote them, 100% in their original form.

The goal of this project was never about perfect grammar or flawless spelling, it was about creativity, vulnerability, and self-expression. Each verse is a raw and beautiful reflection of a unique journey with the Spanish language, and that is exactly what makes them so special.

Thank you for trusting us with your words.

¡Ustedes son los mejores!
